United States Capitol
Restoration Master Plan
Washington, DC

Hoffmann Architects has worked with The Architect of the Capitol through three administrations to diagnose and resolve water infiltration problems at several landmark facilities, including the U.S. Capitol and the U.S. Botanical Gardens. The firm was commissioned by The Architect of the Capitol to develop a master plan for the restoration of the dome of the United States Capitol, which was built in 1863. The master plan addresses maintenance, repair, modifications, and restoration work for all systems, spaces and finishes from the floor of the Capitol Rotunda to the top of the Statue of Freedom, as well as adjacent spaces. The master plan was the result of a 1991 award-winning study Hoffmann Architects conducted to investigate the causes of ongoing water infiltration at the dome. Since then, portions of the repair work have been initiated, and much of the master plan is based on the results of pilot studies the firm conducted to develop a fuller picture of the scope and costs of the repair work. Hoffmann Architects also investigated, designed and directed the rehabilitation of the massive West Terrace of the Capitol.
