Goodwin Hotel
Façade and Roof Restoration
Hartford, CT
The Queen Anne-style Goodwin
Hotel in downtown Hartford was built in the late 1800s and added to the National
Register of Historic Places in 1976. The 124-room luxury hotel boasts highly
detailed facades with ornamental brickwork and terra cotta, which began to
exhibit symptoms of distress and failure. After detailed probes revealed the
extent of the damage, Hoffmann Architects developed designs for an exterior
rehabilitation program that simultaneously created a watertight building
envelope, and maintained the aesthetic/historic features of the hotel,
consistent with state historic commission guidelines. Work included
stabilization of the deteriorated backup, replacement of damaged face brick,
repointing, slate roofing replacement and restoration of ornamental metalwork
and cladding at dormers. Grout-injected sock anchors were specified to improve
the stability of ornamental terra cotta. Phased construction ensured that at
least 80 percent of the Hotel’s guest rooms remained unaffected at any given
time. |
